அறிவியல் உலகில் தற்செயலாக பல பொருட்கள் கண்டறியப்பட்டுள்ளன. அதில் ஒன்று தான் பென்சிலின்.
மரத்தில் இருந்து ஆப்பிள் விழுவதைப் பார்த்ததும்தான், நியூட்டன் புவி ஈர்ப்பு விசையையே கண்டுபிடித்தார்.
அதேபோல் தான் அலெக்சாண்டர் பிளமிங்கும் பென்சிலினைக் கண்டறிந்தார். அந்த சுவையான சம்பவத்தைப் பற்றிப் பார்ப்போமா.
பிளமிங், 1881ல் ஸ்காட்லாந்தில் பிறந்தார். முதலாம் உலகப் போரின் போது படை வீரர்கள் பலர் காயமடைந்து தொற்றுநோய்க் கிருமிகளால் தாக்கப்பட்டு இறந்தனர்.
இதைக் கேள்விப்பட்டு பாக்டீரியாவைக் கொல்லும் மருந்தைக் கண்டுபிடிப்பேன்’ என்று சபதம் கொண்டார் பிளமிங்.
1928ல் லண்டனில் உள்ள செயிண்ட் மேரி மருத்துவமனையில் ஒரு விடுமுறை நாளில் கிருமிகளைப் பற்றி ஆராய்ச்சி செய்தார்.
அன்று விடுமுறை நாளாக இருந்ததால் ஆய்வுப் பொருட்களை அப்படியே வைத்துவிட்டுச் சென்றார்.
அதில் ஒரு தட்டு மூடாமல் இருந்தது. சுற்றுப்புறமும் அசுத்தமாக இருந்தது. அப்போது வீசிய காற்றால் மெல்லிய பூஞ்சணம் அந்த தட்டில் படித்திருந்தது.
சில நாட்கள் கழித்து அந்த தட்டை ஆராய்ந்து பார்த்தார் பிளமிங். அப்போது பூஞ்சணம் படிந்த இடத்தில் கிருமிகள் முழுவதும் அழிந்திருந்தன மற்ற பகுதியில் பெருகி இருந்தன,
உடனே பிளமிங் அந்த பூஞ்சணத்தைப் பயன்படுத்தி ஒரு மருந்து தயாரித்தார். பூஞ்சணத்தின்பெயர் பென்சிலினா நோடேடம். அதனால், அந்த மருந்துக்கு பென்சிலின் என்று பெயரிட்டார்.
இது நடந்து பல ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின் பிளமிங் ஒரு நவீன ஆய்வு கூடத்துக்குச் சென்றார்.
அங்கே ஆய்வுக் கருவிகள் பளபளப்பாகவும், தூய்மையாகவும் இருந்தன. சுற்றுச் சூழல் தூசியற்றும் குளிரூட்டப்பட்டும் இருந்தது.
அப்போது ஒருவர் ‘உங்களுக்கு அதிர்ஷ்டமே இல்லை. ஒரு தரமான ஆய்வகம் கூட உங்களுக்குக் கிடைக்கவில்லையே? அப்படி கிடைத்தால் நீங்கள் இன்னும் நிறைய மருந்துகளைக் கண்டுபிடித்திருப்பீர்களே’ என்று சொன்னார்.
அதற்கு பிளமிங் அமைதியாக, ‘நீங்கள் சொல்வது சரிதான். ஆனால், நிச்சயமாக பென்சிலினைக் கண்டுபிடித்திருக்க மாட்டேன்’ என்றார்

During World War I, many soldiers were wounded and died from infectious diseases. Plumming vowed to find a cure for bacteria after hearing this.
In 1928 he researched germs while on holiday at St Mary's Hospital in London. As it was a holiday, he left the research materials as they were.
One plate was left open. The surroundings were also dirty. At that time, the thin pollen was read on the plate by the wind blowing.
A few days later, Pluming examined the plate. Then the germs were completely destroyed in the place where the pollen was deposited and multiplied in the other area, and immediately Pluming prepared a medicine using the pollen.
The name of the fungus is Penicillina notatum. So, he named the drug penicillin.
Years after this happened, Pluming went to a modern laboratory. The instruments there were shiny and clean. The environment was dust free and air conditioned.
